Exclusive: Demi Lovato Talks Miley Duet, Joe Jonas Split and Feeling ‘More Adult’

Thursday, September 2nd, 2010

Two summers ago, the Disney Channel movie Camp Rock turned then 16-year-old Demi Lovato into a breakout star and ‘tweens the world over fell in love with her character, Mitchie Torres, an everygirl with rock star talent and a pretty cool duet partner (that would be a mulleted Joe Jonas.)

Two years, two pop-rock albums and another Disney movie later, Demi and the JoBros return for the sequel, Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam, premiering September 3. In an exclusive interview with Celebuzz, Demi, who recently blew out her 18th birthday candles, said both she and Mitchie have grown up.

“She has more confidence now,” Demi told Celebuzz of her character. “In the first movie she was really insecure and she didn’t really know who she was. Now she’s more driven.”

You could say the same about Demi, who is starring in her very own Disney Channel series, Sonny With a Chance, working on an R&B-influenced third studio album, moving her family into a new house (!) and touring with the Jonases, including Joe, 21, who is now her ex-boyfriend. How does she manage to remain friends with him?

“Well, you have to, ‘cause you work with him,” Demi told us. “When you’re hurt, it’s easy to move on, so it was very easy for me to move on.”

Her advice for fans attempting to get along with their exes is pretty simple. “Suck it up,” she said with a laugh.

And so she’s doing just that, even revealing that she has a crush on a well-known R&B star.

“I’m kind of digging Trey Songz – he’s pretty hot,” she divulged. Though she tells Celebuzz there’s nothing romantic happening with the 25-year-old singer-actor, she said, “We followed each other on Twitter and direct message each other…he’s pretty awesome.”

Trey’s soulful vibe could be an indication of what fans will hear on Demi’s new album, which she hopes to release early next year. Expect what she calls a “new sound,” a blend of hip-hop and dance tracks, and even – brace yourselves — possible duets with Miley Cyrus and Justin Bieber.

“We talked about doing a duo together, like an acoustic or something. That would be really fun to do with her,” Demi told us of Miley. “She’s one of my best friends and she’s super talented, so I’d love to have her on the album.”

The Biebs, who just shared the stage with Miley this week in New York, is also on Demi’s list of potential collaborators.

“He’s a really sweet kid. I’d love to work with him,” she said. “My little sister loves him and I’m a fan so I guess you could say I’ve got Bieber Fever.”

Amidst buzz that Baby Biebs wants to remake Grease with Miley, Demi says she’d “rather do West Side Story” or Broadway’s In the Heights.

For now, Demi is focusing on a new season of Sonny With a Chance (not to be confused with the similarly-named It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia, which she calls “one of her favorite” shows.) Despite her milestone 18th birthday, she’s in no rush to take on grittier roles.

“I don’t really feel like I need to do that until I step out of my Disney Channel place,” she told Celebuzz. “I’m just kind of waiting until the timing is right, but I feel more adult, just living day by day as a newly 18 year old.

Demi Lovato Wishes She’d Kept Relationship with Joe Jonas a Secret

Friday, August 20th, 2010

Silence is golden: That’s one lesson Demi Lovato has taken away from her brief high-profile romance with Joe Jonas.

After going through a very public breakup last spring, Lovato now says she wishes she’d kept her relationship with her Camp Rock 2 costar quiet.

“I learned my lesson,” Lovato, 17, tells PEOPLE. “It’s not very much fun when you break up in a public relationship. So, maybe next time keep a secret.”

Though the Jonas Brothers member has been portrayed as a heartbreaker, following his split from other young stars like Taylor Swift, Lovato defends him.

“I know that he has the best intentions,” she says. “Definitely most guys don’t have the same intentions that he does.”

‘Want to Shout from Rooftops’
Still, Lovato admits it was tough to keep her feelings to herself once she started dating Jonas, 21, after they finished filming Camp Rock 2: The Final Jam. (It premieres on the Disney Channel Sept. 3 and airs through the Labor Day weekend.)

“You want to say to your fans, ‘Guess what, I’m so in love with somebody.’ You want to shout it from the rooftops. That’s what you do when you fall in love,” she says. “At the same time, I learned my lesson. You know, I’ll go public when I marry someone one day.”

While Jonas has been spotted out with Twilight star Ashley Greene – he declined to comment on whether or not they’re dating – Lovato says she isn’t in a rush to start a new love connection. “No new romances. I’m perfectly happy with being single. I feel like also if I was going to have a new romance, I’d keep it private,” she says.

In the meantime, Lovato is touring with the Jonas Brothers and members of the Camp Rock 2 cast – and she and Jonas are back to being friends. “Working with [Joe] has been fine,” she adds. “It’s been really great.”

Demi Lovato Not Pulling a Miley With New Album

Sunday, July 25th, 2010

When Demi Lovato’s next album comes out, she has no plans to take Miley Cyrus’ untamed approach, and she won’t be ditching her squeaky-clean Disney sheen.

“I don’t think it’s going to change my image, not drastically,” the singer told us at VH1′s Do Something Awards about her third album. “It’s going to be what you’re seeing of me right now. It’s going to be very Demi.”

The Camp Rock actress, who turns 18 next month, did say…

“It’s more mature,” she explained. “It’s definitely grown up, but in a classy way.”

The Teen Choice-nominee, who guest starred on an episode of Grey’s Anatomy in May, also told us she’d love to make a return to ABC’s hit medical drama.

“I’d be there in a second,” she said. “I would come back as a doctor if I could.”

Demi Lovato Wants To Embrace Her ‘Inner Soul’ Diva On Next Album

Friday, July 23rd, 2010

Last year, Demi Lovato released her pop/rock sophomore album, Here We Go Again, and now Lovato is, well, at it again. She’s back in the studio, but unlike her first two efforts, this one will sound a little less hardcore, as Demi embraces her inner-R&B diva.

“I’m really excited for working on new music in the spare time that I have before I go out on tour with the Jonas Brothers,” she told MTV News on Monday in Los Angeles at the VH1 Do Something Awards.

“I’m working on new music, writing new songs, trying to approach a different route, doing a new sound,” Lovato continued. “I’m really excited. It’ll be fun. It’s more R&B/pop. I’m trying to bring out my inner ‘soul’; a new side of Demi,” she laughed. “I’m straying away from the rock this time.”

If Lovato’s enthusiasm about working on her next project wasn’t obvious already, her Twitter posts make it clear. A lot of her recent tweets have been updates about working on that new album or just gigging around with friends.

“I’m literally in love with music. Everything I do in life is for music. If I could, I would marry music,” she wrote over the weekend. “Gathered around with friends playing music.. I live and breathe for these moments in my life.

“Yes!!! Finished writing a song that I’m so proud to call my own!! It’s moments like these that make me never want to stop writing music.. :D ,” Lovato tweeted just days before. “Writing a song that I think my South American fans will love…. ;) this ones for you guys…. Just got the rough cut of the song we did yesterday… soooo excited right now!”
